Getting Rid Of Your Clog

When your drains are clogged it can mean a lot of different things, but it is always annoying. More than anything it just makes life a bit more complicated. The best way to stay away from a clogged pipe is to avoid them altogether by not flushing garbage down the drain. The good news is there are a few different ways that you can get rid of the clog. There is a specific method for cleaning out a drain that you may benefit from. Here are a few different steps that you should take to clean out a clogged pipe:

Liquid Drain Cleaners

One of the very first things that you should try is a liquid drain cleaner. These chemicals are extremely basic, PH higher than 7, and can, therefore, accept hydrogen. This causes the clog to basically erode away. There are a lot of different types of clogs whether it be food, mineral buildup, or hair, a liquid drain cleaning solution is a very powerful tool. These cleaners should be used with caution if you are connected to a septic system rather than a city sewer system. The basic chemicals in the cleaner can kill the bacteria that make a septic system work. It is also important that you use safety equipment when you use the cleaner because if the chemicals get in your eyes or hands it can do a lot of damage.

Pipe Snake

If you try the liquid drain cleaner and you are still having a hard time, there is a pipe snake that you can use. A pipe snake is a think long cable that can essentially dislodge the clog and allow it to flow down the drain.  Luckily you can find a pipe snake in almost any size. You should consider using a small pipe snake first, and then work your way to the bigger drain snakes. Using a pipe snake after you have used a drain cleaner is usually sufficient to get rid of most clogs.

Plumber

If you have tried the first two steps and the clog is still giving you trouble, it is time to call a plumber. Often what you may think is a clog is something much more serious. It is possible that your pipe may have collapsed or even kinked back on itself. This can occur for a number of reasons, but a plumber will be able to troubleshoot the problem and then fix it.
